Greenspan said the filmmakers bought hundreds of items worth about $15,000, including the Charlie Brown polo shirt worn by Eazy-E in the film.

Ware, who grew up in Los Angeles, said she's known the store since she was a teenager.

"If you want any kind of original clothing, you go to Greenspan," Ware said. "That's where every gangster, rapper, everybody went in '87 and '88 when I was in high school."

With his classic and edgy style, the 87-year-old Greenspan has long been a favorite in movie studio wardrobe departments. The store has provided clothing for about 50 movies including American Me, Bugsy, Embung Anjing, Boyz n Hood and La Bamba.

It helped the company carve out a niche in a competitive apparel market dominated by online retailers like Amazon.com and big box stores like Wal-Mart. But supplying the studio is not a steady source of income that the store can rely on. Most of the sales come from regular customers like Marcos Armas.

Armas, 55, travels from Inglewood almost every week to expand his wardrobe. He recently stopped by the store to buy an American-made straw hat and a Pendleton board shirt to complete the cholo look he was going for.

"I used to wear clothes like this when I was a teenager," Armas said. "It's been a long time, I'm getting older and I can't find this style of clothing anywhere anymore. You go to the mall and you can't find it, you go to swap meets and they don't have the right deals.

Ware said that while shopping for "Straight Outta Compton," she opened sealed boxes of hard-to-find items like Puma tank tops and vintage Levi's 501 models — all unused with tags still attached. She also found a Charlie Brown polo shirt that Eazy-E wore in the movie.

Greenspan said that his father did not like late 70s fashion and polyester fabric, and his love was seen from the '40s, '50s and '60s, drove the store to classic clothing.

The store also carries one of the largest selections of Pendleton board shirts anywhere, including shirts custom-made for Greenspan.

Over the years, the shop has attracted a loyal following of Angelenos, including gang members, skaters, bikers, tattoo artists, lowrider enthusiasts, and celebrities like Lady Gaga and Ryan Gosling.

Greenspan, 59, said his grandfather Alec Greenspan, who founded the original store in Watts in 1928, insisted that every customer be treated like "a lady or a gentleman." Since then, the store has been working according to this principle.

Despite the boom in the movie business, Evan Greenspan says the business has slowed down. The US economy may be improving, but many working-class consumers are unemployed or underemployed and not buying as much as they used to.

But its future is uncertain, said Greenspan, who runs the store with a small staff and the help of his son Josh and sister Shira.

Josh Greenspan, 25, said he wasn't sure he was going to take over. He is busy building his own classic clothing brand.

For his father, the store, which has been in South Gate since 1939, is more than just a brick-and-mortar retail store.

"It's a creative way to do things that haven't been done or thought of before," said Evan Greenspan. "This is how I put a roof over my family's head and food on the table. It's my family's 87-year legacy of honor, prestige and multi-generational appeal. Evan is the third generation in his family to run Greenspan's since it started in Watts in 1928 and moved to the current location of the South Gate in 1939. Surrounded by classic menswear with styles from the 1920s to today, hats, trousers, shirts and accessories speak to me. I saw a beautiful Pendleton plaid and realized I had a very similar shirt. Evan told me he contacted Pendleton a few years ago and asked them to recreate some of their classic designs from decades past - just for the Greenspans - and they did!
